This weekend we have a double celebration
not only is it the last weekend before school heads back
but it is also Australia Day
and to celebrate our house will be eating loads and loads of prawns
which made it the perfect subject of my painting today
there is something about the gorgeous colours of the shells that I love
and I have been wanting to have a go at painting them for awhile
so sat down and got this sketch done as a tribute
I did think of doing a painting of a jar of Vegemite again
but it seems to spark the whole debate about the merits of Marmite and promite
which are both plain disgusting in my book
so I took the less controversial route and went with a couple of prawns...
you will note I said prawns .... not shrimp
bloody Paul Hogan and his throwing shrimps on the barbie
drove us nuts the whole time we were living in Florida
not because the joke got old very quickly... although it kind of did
but because we don't call them shrimp
shrimp are like little bait prawns... or really little kids
as in... check out how short he is... what a shrimp
so throwing shrimp on the barbie would be kind of dumb
because they would slip between the grill thingies
not much of a meal there
In fact we never even throw them on the barbie at all at our place
Sinus man would freak at the thought
he pretty much inhales them as fast as they can be peeled
and in a gross twist, he has been known to suck the heads
which makes me throw up in my mouth a little bit any time I see it
I like a perfectly peeled and cleaned prawn
and a nice sauce to dip it in
or better yet in a spicy Thai noodle dish like a Pad Thai
and you will never , ever, see me suck a prawn head
I wouldn't even be tempted even if George Clooney turned up with a plate of prawn heads
and said he would snog me senseless if I would suck just one
no siree that is just pain disgusting
and quite frankly it is lucky that Sinus has so many great features
because sucking prawn heads could be a bit of a deal breaker
So Australia Day is about to dawn
and in true Queensland fashion it is bucketing with rain
and expected to continue in epic proportions all weekend
so it is just as well we aren't the throwing them on the barbie types
Happy Australia Day to my fellow Aussies
and a happy weekend to everyone else...xx
Linking up with Paint Party Friday

I used to think you had some kind of magical shrimp that were barbeque friendly. Turns out you have the same kind we do...
As for a prawn head sucking Sinus..something is so wrong with that whole phrase...yeah...not a good thing...it's kinda like toe fungi...eeewie...
Lucky he can play scrabble... he's still up there for me!!
Great illustration!!
Happy prawn day!
Hugs Giggles
Your prawns look lovely! I am not a big "peel and eat" kinda girl though since their beady eyes kinda creep me out~
Ever had crawfish? They are quite yummy and people (not me) suck the heads on those too.
Enjoy your last bit of vacation together!
OMG, OMG, OMG!! Happy Australia DAY!! Can I be officially adopted so I can celebrate too?? I feel like i'm in love with two countries now. Although, I'm not surprised with the latent loyalty I feel to Australia, Canada and Australia are so much alike. I do wish I had the accent though (but then I'm sure you'd say I have an accent so there's that, hehehe)
Anyway, Happy Aussie Day my sweet friend, have a prawn for me, I miss them right now, with this diet I have to test their reactiveness first. Letter to follow soon and (surprise!!) finally my APR list will be attached. Hehehe. (don't tell anyone though, lol)
;o)
love, love,
Jenn
Can you send us some rain down here in victoria/ We need it to put the fires out! Pretty hot at a 100k front moving forwards for a week in Gippsland where I live. I have a grass paddock behind my house.
I love big prawns too. Tiger ones. Yummy. Love your sketches too. Good on ya Trace
They really are very attractive little (big??) prawns, with the artistic ballet pose and curled long thingies on top. I'm not well up on the names of various body parts of prawns. Great colours.
It looks so good to eat, i'm felling kind of hungry. :)
Great post and beautiful work as always!
have a great day and happy PPF!
Nora
Happy A day to you down underers! Does "snog" mean what I think you mean? Oh my! George, huh? Ok! Nicely done prawns!! HPPF!
Another fabulous post!
I love your beautiful prawns - makes me want to eat some too ;)
Have a wonderful celebration,
xoxo
once again fantastic Tracy!

A terrific and fun post again Tracy, loving your prawns. Enjoy your special day. Happy PPF, Annette x
Love your prawns, happy Australia Day. Please could you send some of your rain over the Tasman, it is so dry on the east coast of nz.
I love the shape of the prawns - it's like a bouquet of shrimp! Great color, too.
Rinda
Hummmmmm! These shrimp are saying: "Eat me". Good job. Saludos
Your prawns don't make me hungry! I only eat them, when I come across them at a dinner out of house. We have tiny shrimps where I live, and they are supposed to be a delicacy, but not for me.
But your painting of them looks wonderful, great colours and pen-lines!
Happy Australia day and weekend!
YUM, prawns- I've never had them, but they look like baby lobsters! My brother used to live in Louisiana, and he developed a THING for eating crayfish and sucking their heads, and yes...GROSS!
Love your painting- arranging them in a circle was a great way to compose them.
And of course, as always, I'm loving the smiles your "voice" brings!
Have a wonderful last holiday weekend!
xxoo
Stephanie
I'm with you about the sucking the heads being almost a deal breaker! So glad I live so far inland that prawns are rarely served around here!
Sinus would fit right in at a crawfish boil in Louisiana. Are you sure he's not a Cajun masquerading as an Aussie?
Love your painting. Hope your Aussie day is stuffed with juicy prawn goodness.
Fabulous Prawns!! Perfect colours! Love it!
I LOVE prawns - but no I would NOT suck the heads. That is GROSS in every way! And I agree - shrimps are those little baby things.
I thought that Marmite and Vegemite were the exact same thing. I LOVE Marmite! It is all manner of yum in my book :0) So what in the world is Vegemite then?
Happy Australian day!!! :0)
Fun and creative post ~ love your sense of humor and of course your illustrations are excellent ! Carol

Happy Australia Day!! We call them shrimp in Canada, I actually had never heard the word Prawn until I watched a British cooking show.I suppose the movie people say shrimp so the American audience knows what they are speaking of, we Canadians just say shrimp mostly, they are ugly little beggers though, I am not a fan, my family is though. We have Crawfish that swim in creeks here that look a bit like Prawn, people suck the heads of those when eating, it is rather barbarian, tasty they say though, I take a pass,
Lovely prawn painting...with its wonderful composition and complementary color palette!
♥♥♥
Happy PPF!!

I'm so glad I just "met" you! Your posts have me laughing, just what I need! The prawns are beautiful, I love to eat them too, but agreed on the sucking the heads.. Love all your artwork, can't wait for more.
I always love the stories you have! Is it crazy to admit, I have never eaten a prawn? I have tried shrimp and found them too... fishy. But your prawns are full of gorgeous color and lines and I like the fact I can enjoy them without having to eat them! Happy PPF.
Sucking prawn heads is indeed gross. I'm glad you sorted out that business about the old shrimp on the barbie line... Do you always pull out machetes and say "this is a knife" too?
I love my prawns dripping in chilli and garlic.... mmmmmm....... delish.....
I want to have Australia Day!!! So unfair. I love prawns, but prefer the already shelled and be-headed kind. As for sucking heads - I'm with you... no sirie!
Your prawns are bright and colorful and beautifully done, Tracey. I have had prawns but back east here we only get shrimp at the grocery store. And I could never eat anything that still had its head on it. I used to be served trout with heads and just couldn't do it. Happy Australia Day!
why, happy Australia Day there! THose prawns manage to look cuddly and cute together, don't know why.... (prawn brains? eww)
Oh TFK, once again you have me rolling in the aisles. I hate the term "shrimp" too, it drives me crazy. Happy Australia Day my sweet friend, I'll be thinking about you and sucking down a stubble in your honor...hugs xx
omg Tracey... sinus man sucks on prawn heads?!? So gross. i must be the only maritimer here who doesn't do lobster. They just look too much like spiders to me. Anything with creepy crawly legs - i avoid. LOL. And i'm afraid the prawns (although the PAINTING is beautiful), just gross me out. i laughed at your comment about throwing shrimp on the barbie and how they would slip between the grill thingies. Hilarious. Hope you had a wonderful AUSTRALIA DAY - even if it was probably filled with prawns. ;-) !xox
Hi Tracey. Happy Australia Day to you. I think your prawns are just awesome. Happy prawns to you.:) tee hee.
Ok - so I laughed and kept a grin on way after I read this earlier today. I bet Sinus didn't such prawn heads on your first date! I live in South Carolina - we have the babies here - plain old shrimp. In season they come right out of the water around us so they are yummy. But fresh ones come with heads and everyone says how easy it is to pop them off - I try to make believe they come without heads and thats the only way they get on my plate. Happy PPF
I don't call these things shrimp or prawns, I call them insects of the sea! Disgusting looking things....why did anyone ever think to put one in their mouth????You'll never find one of these critters on my barbie or anywhere else in my house! Your drawing is great since it made me wince immediately! :)
Happy AU Day - sorry it's raining, but isn't that the way?
Fabulous artwork. would love to have you onboard for the Reading Club.
all the info is here..

Yes I often wondered about those Barbies you had down under. Glad to know they were normal sized ones. :)Sounds like a wonderful tradition eating prawns, minus the head sucking of course. Have a great weekend. Nice job BTW on the prawns. HPPF
Happy Aussie day to you all. I loved vegemite when I tasted it in Australia in 2007. Yummy. Happy PPF too.
I love your unique prawn composition. Hope you had a fun Australia Day. Blessings!
LOVE the painting of the prawns!!! Great color - shoot, even your vegemite jar is nice, though I still don't understand that whole Australian thing with vegemite, marmite, etc., etc......
I hope you enjoyed your holidays and your headless prawns.
your painting is wonderful ~
Wishing you a Happy Australia day from your friend up over?? xo Happy PPF!
I love your prawns!!!! So cute!
Happy PPF!
Happy Australia Day, your prawns have such a lovely colour, must be delicious!
Sucking prawn heads? Yuck, yuck, and yuck. I sure do like your prawn painting, though. The colors are just great. Hope Australia Day was loads of fun!
Hear-hear for the correct terminology: PRAWNS:-) And your painting do them justice. Yum. Want some . Right now! But about the Marmite vs Veggiemite debate... I don't know, Tracey. Though we munched only Marmite and Bovril in SA, your Veggiemite will have to live up to one of the seven wonders of the kitchen to beat both of those... so go aead and send me a spoonful and I'll be the judge (hmmm, no make that 6 spoons full, for the boys will want to test-taste as well and I am not sharing mine :-)
Prawns are my favourite food, esp. now that we don't eat meat.
it is so much fun to visit and see what you are up to and what you've drawn. I didn't really even know the difference between prawns & shrimp...but I guess it's size! fun grouping of them standing together...guess I should consider 'playing with my food' before I eat it!
What a great post -- the paintings are vibrant. I think the prawns look quite resigned and even zen about their fate. Plus I learned a lot about Australia day, cooking and language. Great blog!
Loved your post and awesome painting of shr.... I mean prawns! :) Hope you had a great Australia day!
Happy Auustralia Day to you! Your colorful illustrations are fantastic-I especially love the prawns!!!
You captured the colours of those prawns perfectly! Hope you had a happy day!
Happy Australia Day! I don't have them but your painting looks LOVELY with all those wonderful hues :)
HPPF Tracey :)
Love the prawns and the vegemite. Makes me hungry for the shrimps. Lovely drawings!
HAHAHA, This post had me cracking up! And there would be NO WAY IN THE DEPTHS OF HELL that I would suck a head of a prawn. No. No way, no sir-ee bob! Nope! Gross. And. Also, you're much stronger than me, because if Husband even pretended to suck the head of a prawn I may contemplate divorce! YUUUUCK! LMAO.
I too love the red-orange of shrimps/prawns/lobsters - and love to eat them, but don't anymore now that I know I'm really allergic to shellfish.
P.S. I've been troubled with one particular spammer that fills up a whole page with spam - 5-6 at a time!! I've been trying to find out how I can block him from even leaving a comment (even though Akismet blocks it). Dirty buggers!
Happy Australia day to you, the family, and your beautiful prawns. They will forever be immortalized, if headless--yuck!! Hope you're surviving the rain...thought that was our weather this time of year!? xx
Happy Australia Day! Hope you aren't floating away. Your prawns are so nicely done...I also like to eat them nice and clean. Yum. :)
Great post and beautiful work.
No barbecuing here ... But we did watch the Aussie movie "the Dish" and later listened to my husbands Aussie playlist with about ten different versions of Waltzing Matilda :)
I love the colors in your shrimps:)
Never see them like that here, though. Hope you had a good Australia Day!
Fran T xo
Now this shows how behind I am with visiting because Australia Day was...oh how long ago??? Well anyway I'm here now.
I have to admit George and Hugh Jackman together (phew...now there's a thought...) couldn't make me suck a prawn head!!! Well let me think that through some more...and get back to you...I mean George AND Hugh?!!?!? :)))
Prawns look fantastic and that's a great colour. Note I said prawns and not shrimp! See I listen.
We had lamb on the Barbie...it was a great day with perfect temps. :D
