The New Alarm Clock....

I had grand plans for my week long blog break
Summer is finally here and school is done for the year
so I had envisaged sleep ins and abandoning any pretence of organisation
I had plans to alternate swims with studio time
and all round have a relaxing week
but it would appear this stupid squeaky duck toy had other ideas

This duck
aided by his partner in crime known to many of you as
Mushu the wonder mutt
decided that there was indeed something amiss with a world
that had me still in bed at 5.30 am
so Mushu took to flinging this insanely squeaky toy up on to the bed
at ungodly hours as a way to remind me that there are no sleep ins allowed
putting my desire to throttle him aside for a moment
I must say that I admire his ability to fling the toy that far
I mean we have one of those really high beds
and he is a little mutt
so it takes quite the effort to get it up onto the bed
not to mention his uncanny ability to get it to hit me in the face

So back to the wake up call
did I mention he hit me in the face with this thing
it didn't land just near my head
or in the general vicinity of my body
oh no he managed to get it on my face every single morning
and he then followed this mighty, freakily accurate throw by jumping up onto the bed
prancing all over me
and proceeding to squeak the bejeesus out of it
until I gave in and got out of bed
the joy
I was just so thrilled to spend every morning of the first week of the summer break
being hit in the face with a squeaky, manky toy
that always had that disgusting sheen of dog saliva
it almost made me miss the school routine
or maybe the Kookaburra alarm clock from a few weeks ago
okay maybe both those things are taking it a bit far
but it is not my favourite way to start the day

So instead of this relaxing yet productive time
I spent half the week being grumpy from the early wake up
half the time maniacally scrubbing my face to remove all possible traces
of dog saliva
and the other half chasing my tail trying to catch up all the things I had thought I would do
and yes I know it is three halves
but I woke up being hit in the head with a saliva coated squeaky toy
so just back off okay!!!!!!!!

I have decided dog and duck win and have given up all thoughts of sleeping in
and so I am expecting a wonderfully productive week ahead
I can't be grumpy if I didn't think I would get a sleep in anyway right????

Linking up with Sunday Sketches...xx

before this new alarm clock started I had been on a blogging break
but here are the two previous posts in case you missed them...

ha ha ;) I mean, I'm sorry you had to deal with the early alarm. That duck toy looks tuckered out too. Mmmmm, but I see you have your Bialetti on hand to jump start those frayed nerves of early rise. ;) Another post with brilliant sketches. I admire your work and hope you can get some rest.

Snorting with laughter! Hilarious! And the whole lie in thing...dogs are as bad as toddlers for getting you up at ungodly hours of the day, but you love them anyway. Hope you have a nicer week this week.

OMG, you did such a great job recreating the insanely loud squeaky duck! So sorry you didn't get to sleep in but you gave me a good giggle! Happy Sunday!

I love that duck and would toss it around with saliva on it if it were mine and I was a dog! This story reminded me of the four little white dogs I have owned! My little Benji would nag at me with his toy all day long. We had to throw it a million times! Finally I hid it in a drawer. So he would stand and bark at the drawer... You described it perfecting... great memories my dogs...but sort of why after 35 years of being a dog owner we now babysit one several times a years for a few weeks at a time!! Instead of being a dog mom, I am now a dog grandma!!Love love love the illustration!!

uuhhoh. Me thinks me's gonna bees in troubles with de toy I'z sent to mushu for his stocking. Just so you know, revenge isn't nice and sending letter bombs and death threats to friends in canada just because they sent a squeaky toy to your mutt is just, ... ummm. mean? lol. ;o)

Oh and CGRANNY SENT THE DAMN TOY, not me, hehehe. (Got out of that right quick didn't I?)

Your painting of the duck is so endearing. He would make such a great character for a children's picture book. And he's better than the original.

Tip no' 1 - Hide the duck!

Tip No' 2 - If you can't hide it, I'm sure there are many suitably pointy objects in your studio that could at least silence.

No idea about the dog drool, just keep a towel at hand.

I suppose now wouldn't be the best time to mention that I had a lie-in until 9am?

*Time for a sharp exit........

Aww that duck... looks like he's fed up with the little mut's behaviour as well. XD
Beautiful work as always! Loving the look of your lunchbox painting as well ^^

Every now and then, I roll over in the middle of the night, in the dark, and SQUEAK! I roll on a squeaky, drooly toy...and Ellie (my dear Toy Fox Terrior) thinks it's a special time to play! In the dark, in the middle of the night. Uh huh. Tracey, your post and art and doggy make me laugh and make me smile. Have your dog call my dog, though.

LOL! We have 3 dogs, so I know exactly what you mean. I always wake up early, so sometimes on the weekends ill go and lay on the couch in our den. Either our greyhound comes and puts his pointy nose in my face, our Chihuahua will jump up on me, or our Boston Terrier will come grunt at me. We got to love them.

The duck looks as worn out as you must be. Maybe he needs to take a nap somewhere very, very high. ;)

Sorry you've not been able to get your late morning sleeps. Have you tried explaining to the pup?

Oh, and I count things as having three halves all the time!

The little painting is adorable. So at least there's that.

This duck is so funny. He looks like he has just had it with being a chew toy! Poor thing's exhausted. You captured it perfectly.

Aw shish - my comment crashed... never mind, you missed me moaning about cat sick...

PS - agree with Nigel - hide the duck!

WrightStuff said...

Double shish - you've put approval on, so it probably didn't crash after all. Never mind you get three comments from me now for the price of one!

I am thinking Mushu thought you wanted him to wake you up every morning, otherwise you would have removed it? yes? See, you didn't know you had asked him to be your alarm clock! lol waving hi from the hills of North Carolina :)

I remember the early a.m. wake up calls from my cat, but those didn't include a saliva-infused toy. Love the pic of mushu and his assistant.

Anne Manda said...

Oh LOL - but poor you! Couldn't the duck just ... *cough* go missing*cough*?

janice smith said...

My first thought was the same as Nigel's: Hide that stupid squeaky duck toy! Mushu us awfully cute. I imagine it would be hard to stay irritated with him for long :-)

sandra Busby said...

Ugh! I'd be horrified at the thought of doggie saliva all over my face at any time, let alone the morning! Maybe the dog just wanted you to draw it! And maybe now you have, you might be given a chance to have that well deserved lay in you've been dreaming about! Love the drawing by the way. So cute!!

Oh I love this post and your artwork is adorable and funny and makes me all kinds of happy. Thanks for sharing. Cute pup, too!

A dog-slobbered toy in the face has to be among the most horrible alarm clocks in the history of the world!!
BLECH!!
Great post!

That slimy duck toy would have been locked away someplace after the first morning at my house--LOL! It is a funny looking thing. I'm glad you showed us the real thing and the culprit, too. ;)

I enjoyed your tirade and can relate as well regarding squeaky toys. Your drawing of the duck is so innocent and cute.....how could it cause such distaste (pun, tee hee)?
Missing several weeks, myself, I did catch up with your celebration of two month freedom and fun sketches. ENJOY!

The little alarm-duck looks so innocent and cute but treated you like a squeaky wet monster. Uuuuuhhhh yes I can well imagine what you went through. However the blue squeaky wet little monster you painted looks so charming!

Hi! Saw your work on Faint of Heart, poor Vicki! I knew she was in for a long convalences. It appears you get no sleep in either. I never have. I just got out of the hospital. Lost my Electrolytes. Someone said they would do the grocery shopping. Ha Ha! On the days still off from work - Sleep in late and recover. There are tons of ways to keep you YOU! Out of the bed. Well now I know what to put on my Tuesday List. I get the CAT PAW on the EyeBall Wake up Call, with a nice LONG Meoww!

Funny post! We have a kitty alarm clock...she will paw at your nose until you get up and if that doesn't work, the dog starts whining soon after. Thank goodness my husband is the early riser and I can get away with ignoring the animals! You did a great job on that cute toy...maybe you can remove the squeaker?
