The Last Lunch Box ...

It is a monumental day today
not a birthday
not an anniversary
the cleaning fairies didn't turn up
it wasn't the day I woke up and my butt had magically shrunk while I slept
it is better than all of those
it is the last lunch box of the year
and at Paula's suggestion I am drawing it in celebration of this wonderful day

It has come not a moment too soon
my brain had pretty much run out of interesting options about a month and half ago
and this last one was pretty much stuffed with whatever was left
no thought was given to nutritional value or balance
I just shoved whatever was at hand and zipped it up
all the while singing at the top of my lungs and doing a mad happy dance about the kitchen
it was quite the sight I would think

There was edamame in there as a token effort to have something green
and the leftover Thai noodles aren't that bad
but the rest is pretty ordinary
but who cares on the last day of the year
and by the time most of you read this we will be lying by the pool
revelling in that feeling of it being the start of the 2 month summer break
no getting up at 5.30 am, uniforms or school runs
our days will be filled with swimming, eating ice blocks in the pool
trips to the beach, smelling like sunscreen all the time
and spitting watermelon seeds at each other at every opportunity
in short, my favourite time of year

Happily this painting will also pull triple duty
it meets the brief for the last Artist Play Room of the year
where the lovely Jenn asked us to paint five or so things

I have done it on a Friday so hello Paint Party Friday

and it is the last day of Art Every Day Month!!!!
AEDM has been great again this year
and a big thank you to all the people who have supported it
and took the time to visit, comment and play along
and a special shout out to Leah for hosting
I love that I can open my finished work draw and it is full of all sorts of new work
it has been a great month ... xx

In the last two posts I have been writing and painting about

Tracey, I laughed out loud at the mozzie tail when you noticed that your "normal" eye now looked very blue and matched your studio shoes. What a riot! I hope you enjoy your time off. So is it warm/hot for Christmas? I guess it must be like living in Florida here in the states.
Your lunch box is very picturesque!

You guys are gonna have such a great summer over there, and to have Christmas right in the middle must make it even more special.

Great painting for APR, thanks for coming for our last ha rah or 2012.
Much love,

This lunch box looks better than any I would put together for my kids. That's why they eat the school lunch every day. It keeps everyone happy. Your paintings are so good -- such great colors and drawing. I love how you take everyday items and topics and make them fun.

Great painting and honouring the end of the luchbox year. I have another 2 weeks of them here in Brisbane, but hooray for the summer hoildays, my favorite time too!

Firstly, I'm very jealous that you are having summer right now - it's brass monkey weather here right now! Secondly, I was going to be jealous also that you're off for two months but in two weeks' time I'll be off indefinitely so I shouldn't really complain!! Thirdly, I love seeing all your different illustrations together like that - you have such a distinctive style and they all look brilliant beside each other - makes me wish I had that one signature style too instead of being all over the place!

ooooh so envy you in all that sunshine and relaxing by the pool....aaah sheer bliss. As you know its the onset of Winter in the UK for us, so woolly scarves, mitts, furry boots and thick coats, plus not to mention the sexy woolly hat........lol

Great drawing of the dreaded lunchbox and a fun post Tracey. Enjoy the weekend and happy PPF, Annette x

There is something so special about the last day of school and the beginning of summer vacation. As teachers we were as excited as the kids. Sometimes more excited - depended upon the year. Have a wonderful time at the pool and the beach and especially sharing time with your daughter. Can't wait to read about all of the fun you two will have.

Hmmm...edamame...if I can't identify it, it would be a good excuse not to eat it:) I can't believe you are just starting your summer! We have snow on the ground, for pete's sake! If I lounged on the beach right now, every part of my body would be blue...and frozen. Oh well, your lunch looks good. Have a great weekend. -Terri

Your lunch box looks nice, Lucky Girl. School breaks up here for summer(NZ) in 2 weeks so Ill have the pavement to myself (I live a street away from our local High School) My cat Bro will be able to loll about on it without the fear of being trampeled by careless teenagers boots.

Yeah for summer break:) We are just starting winter and my skin is cracking and the lack of light even this far south affects my moods so I have out my lamp. One day maybe I will be able to venture back and fourth and skip this season that some love so much. Hope your eye is well soon and thanks for sharing your art:) oh and I have been craving Thai food so those noodles sounded so yummy.

Sharing your beautiful "summer-visions" of the pool and the summerbreak while we have minus ten and drive through the snow like a tractor jumps through the fields is in fact a lovely distraction :) You created wonderful sketches for AEDM and I admire you for hang in there a whole month! Enjoy the break and enjoy the pool!!!!!

Denise Mulligan said...

Well, congratulations for making it through another school year! I'm completely envious as I sit here in freezing NY.

Would love to join you by the pool perhaps with a margarita but its only 8:15 am here. (If i do drop by,hold the salt it has so much sodium it's not good for you) but make mine a double. Only because I hate school and still am quite rebellious about it. Even though my kids have to go and not me. I rebel against the lunch making , homework and having to loose my dearly needed beauty rest.
But you enjoy yourself and keep painting those beauties. Hopefully while at the pool .
