5.30 with Finn and Jake ...

As regular readers will know I face a 5.30am alarm every school day
which is not that conducive to me making sense
Phantom gets up at 4.30am... seriously... no clue why... she just always has
so by the time I come down she is awake and ready to chat and things
me... not so much... the brain takes quite a while to wake up and unscramble
which is not being helped by the morning viewing these days
gone are the lovely tones of the Dirty Jobs Guy
and no more Bear Grylls getting buck naked and jumping in a freezing lake
now we have Adventure Time with Finn and Jake
if there is a non adult in the house you will already be shaking your head knowing where I am going with this
because this show would do anyone's head in

This is a post apocalyptic cartoon that ignores all laws of narrative, visual continuity and common sense with a disregard that is actually quite admirable
at 5.30 am though, it can be downright weird
I am a cartoon purist... I want to see anvils being dropped on coyotes
bad guys being chased by Great Danes, and mice outwitting cats
instead I am faced with one of the last humans on earth
who was bought up by the dog's parents
and the dog is magic because he rolled in a magic mud puddle
of course!!!!
The bad guy is the Ice King, and every girl is a princess of some type
there is a rainicorn who speaks Korean
a rainicorn is a rainbow unicorn if you didn't know...
and don't even get me started on the armpit farting penguin called Gunther
actually he is kind of the high point for me
nothing like a good fart joke at 5.30 am

If you feel the need to revisit those college years when you would go to a party
and find yourself trying to have a conversation with stoner guy
then go find yourself a kid and ask them to explain Adventure Time to you
you will be having flashbacks like no bodies business

Watching it when you are fully awake doesn't help that much
and I am starting to think that even if I had downed a jug of margaritas at warp speed
it still wouldn't make sense
The guys who create this thing are well out there
I can't help but think that Stoner guy from college may in fact be behind this thing
it would certainly explain a lot

But all of that is ok
and I'm not dissing it... I just don't get it
I know that as a parent I'm not supposed to get these things
I am supposed to be made to feel old and out of touch.... no hassles with that
my only hassle is being faced with it at 5.30 am
it is a very odd way to start the day

So at the moment I am counting down the days to the end of the school year
and the two glorious months of Summer break
5.30 am will not be seen... weird cartoons will be forgotten
and Phantom can watch in peace
just four school days left!!!!

My last few posts have been about more regular topics

Day 21 ...

I am getting old...what happened to good old fashioned cartoons. I don't know the one your talking about but it sounds like all the things I love, NOT. I can't wait for the Christmas hols...we only get two weeks though...:(

well, thats a new one to me Never heard of this, 4:30 is still night time in my book, you should b glad, she wakes herself and is up and raring t go. I had three kids who were nasty grizzly bear demon children who were still shoving toast in their mouth and grumping out the door half awake everyday, the only good thing is their own children are doing the same thing, Karma, I do love my children, but they were not happy risers, no they were not.beautiful cartoon!

This show must not be aired on American TV, because I am often up at 4:30 am. But I like what you said about the cartoon that ignores all laws of narrative and common sense. That describes much of American TV to me!

Oh Dear, I missed Bear Grylls. . . that would have been some show. I like all your characters. What fun you have. Blessings, Janet PPF

Having kids will definitely teach you how to get up in the morning; at least it did for me. I once yelled at the top of my lungs, "I do not get up at 5 in the morning." But my newborn son had different ideas, and still does. Your cartoons are charming and creative!

Love your cartoons and rising grumps, one needs several cups of tea before making sense of the world, although it sounds as if these cartoons don't make any sense anytime.

how funny! and how incredibly bizarre!! I think you might be right about the stoner guy! Here right now is a show called rasta-mouse which are little wallace and gromit style animated characters who all speak with a really bad Jamaican lilt (now I know why white kids in England grow up sounding like Bob Marley!)
Love your illustrations even if the show is mad as a box of frogs!

I have never been a cartoon person but watched lots of them with my son and now my grandsons. I'm an early morning person but love the quiet of the morning not the craziness of cartoons.

I do love your illustrations. As soon as I saw them, I couldn't watit to see what you wrote.

You are such a natural. I want to be like you when I grow up. Sigh. Happy PPF.

Every so often something reminds me why I don't have a TV. This is one of those moments.

4.30 I can live with, always been a bit of an early bird, but a blaring Tv would drive me mad.

I may have to go and mug Youtube to see what I'm missing.

Love the illustration though, and my youngest would really get the farting penguin.

Now I really feel like an antique! Never mind not understanding the cartoon - I don't even understand the description of it.

The illustrations are really good though, and the sense of movement terrific.

this cracked me up. Adventure time is huge in our house. I'm so happy to let its surreal weirdness wash over me. (and for me it's such an improvement over those godawful smart-ass preteens with a laugh track that are all over american TV). now, everybody chime in the the answer to this question "what time is it??????"

(happy summer!)

I giggle snorted through your whole post.... Makes me glad we don't have cable television anymore. . Cause I KNOW my kids would torture me with it! Enjoy your summer! ( which seems soo odd to me, because we are ramping up for winter here lol)

5.30am?????!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
5.30AM???????????!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Are you SERIOUS!! I struggle to peel myself out of bed at 7am! I can't even begin to function without having had at least two cups of tea and as for chat - well, everyone knows better than to bother talking to me in the morning! And if I had to watch that on the telly first thing, it's likely that my telly would be hurtling out of the window, swiftly followed by the person watching it!

Lori said...

Tracey, I'm with you - give me the singing rabbit, anvil that drops on coyotes, and the cat that chases the mouse and I'm a happy cartoon watcher. This new stuff singing sponges and all that craziness and I'm lost. Your posts always make me smile. :)

Last night I felt like the one in touch and my Mom and brother the ones who just didn't get it! My brother 10 years my junior had called on last Friday to ask for a movie recommendation for he and my Mom who is 91 for watching after Thanksgiving dinner. I recommended "Moonrise Kingdom"...a sweet, funny and unique movie with little violence and sex. Well, it turns out they turned it off after the scene where the two main characters meet in a field to go on their adventure that they had been planning by mail for a year. What was that stand and stare at each other all about? My mother asked, and those boy scouts with all their silly behavior! Well, I was dumbfounded. At least a dozen people I talked to loved this movie and thought it was the best all summer, until "The Intouchables" came along. So I can feel your pain, Tracey as being in the "I don't get it crowd" and for feeling out-of it, we are all so different in our tastes no matter what our age! I love your cartoon painting today especially the penguin!

never heard of that cartoon but now I feel I know it well. Love your illustration of it and how you can make your morning routine sound so cheerful and horrifying all at the same time! Happy PPF!

Your humor is as delightful as your wonderful paintings, Tracey. I don't watch TV in the mornings and certainly not before 8 a.m. so I don't know about this TV show.

LOVE IT! You never cease to amaze me with your creative flair and awesome talents!

OK - so my 7 yo grandson has lived with us all his life and he watches Finn and Jake. I knew it was a surreal cartoon - but my meager brain shuts off as soon as it comes on - so I never really knew the background story. I always loved roadrunner and Wile E Coyote so I am right there with you about anvils falling on heads. At least those cartoons were only physically violent - they didn't mess with your mind! Love your illustrations even if I don't love the show.

Adventure Time is an acquired taste, definitely, but your paintings have the style down cold.

Since I am an eternal 12 year old, my favorite is The Regular Show. My kid and I watch it and laugh till we are limp. His dad never cracks a smile, and questions the plots. Stupid grown up.

The paint of the cartoon made me smile, they are very happy looking. Lovely painting as usual!!

This is the show I always tell my kids to change to another cartoon If I found them watching. I haven't seen an episode completely, but I think is not for their ages. (4 & 6)
I tell my daughter -when you are older I'll let you watch it, but if I'm not there, they watch what they want.

Happy PPF!

Finn and Jake? I've never heard of it, but then, I haven't watched TV for several years. I love your paintings of these strange little creatures. Hang on until summer break! It's almost here. :)

Sound horrible to me! Even the thought of 5:30 am makes me cringe. The sun doesn't come up here until nearly 8am and my body protests when it's not light out.
I'm wondering while looking at your paintings if you use a waters label pen or pencils or if the shading is grey watercolor.

Early morning tv never makes much sense to me! I was a child of the first manga tv shows - astroboy and the like, and i imagine they never made much sense to my parents, and now my kids are watching abc2 and i often wonder about the crap they love to watch! Fabulous paintings - heres to sleep ins and tv that makes sense!

Debbie said...

the cartoon sounds very complicated, and I must be from a simpler day too. I wached the cat and mouse cartoons, and the roadrunner too. Your sketches are wonderful and your post is so much fun to read! I enjoyed my visit as always!

Never heard of this show, but I bet stoner guy and a couple of his friends are responsible alright!! ;)

Denise Mulligan said...

Hee hee! You need to roll a fat one right now and start watching again. It will make total sense.

Just kidding. My son watches this one and whenever I'm sitting there while it's on I blurt out "This is so weird!" Then we both start cracking up at how bizarre it really is. Then I chime in again, because I just can't believe it... saying "Oh, my God, what is this show?" "Whaht?" "Oh, this is too weird."

Goes like that every time.

I think I'll stick with family guy which I actually get, along with life with louie, bobbys world and south park....lots of smut, sarcasm, and silly all wrapped up with a bow!!

Wow early mornings for you! Lucky you're not a night hawk!! Wonderful characters to illustrate!! Very nice!

Too funny, my kids LOVE that show- my son actually went as the ice king for Halloween- know that's probably not really his name, but it's what I always call him!
LOVE your illustration of this- in fact, could you email me how much you would charge for a print of it- if it's even available? I think my son would love this, and I'd love having a piece of your work in my house!
xx

I have 2 non adults in the house and I've never heard of this show. Mind you, we're not up at 5.30 either .... That sounds truly horrible. I have a hard time getting up before 8am ... Gunther sounds like fun though, maybe I should have a look at it once ... Love your illustrations! Saw some of your work in the Collective Store :-)

this is too funny. I have grandkids and I have to tell you keeping up with what they're talking about (as if it were common knowledge of course) is beyond me. I have explained to the older one that he has to stop flitting between movies, cartoons and videos if he wants me to participate in the conversation. I can't much understand the little one anyways - I think I have about a year to go before I have to participate in her storytelling! Which is to say it may be hard on your head (omg 5:30 a.m.? that's hard enough!) but this piece sure started my day off right!

Thank goodness, everyone here is over the age of 21! I love the way you've drawn the characters though. They're so charming!

I loved it to read this note. It is so funny and crazy and surreal to have these kind of adventure at 5:30 in the morning and the illustration is so cute and so colorful. I fell in love with Gunter the armpit farting penguin :) not only your drawing but your description is brilliant too!

Tracey, as always you make me laugh.
