Bullied Tulips...

The Summer of Colour has started over at
and the first colour challenge is Rainbow Sherbet
so all pinks, oranges, yellow and a touch of white
not exactly colours you find abounding in Queensland
in a rather blustery and grey winter

but in one of those magical coincidences
I arrived at the grocery shop just as a man was unpacking arm loads
of the most glorious looking tulips in rainbow sherbet type colours.
How we were managing to have tulips in winter was a touch puzzling
so I asked the man about it and he said they had been forced
forced... okay that doesn't sound too good...

For the rest of the shop all I could think about was field full of tulips
with men standing over them shouting at them to grow
or maybe they had workers walking around in swimsuits
trying to fool them into thinking it it warmer than it is
or maybe, in a bad flower farm, you have an awful man who holds secateurs
near buds and tells them to bloom or the bud gets it
no matter what happens bullied tulips can't be happy tulips
especially when upon blooming they find Winter rather than Spring
talk about being ripped off at every turn
so it was with a heavy heart that I carried my poor bullied tulips home...

I tried to find them a lovely sunny spot
and put them in a pretty vase
but I think they were just too much for them and they lasted a very short time
not really long enough to do the more detailed drawing I had hoped
so instead I only managed this sketchy painting
but at least there is evidence that they were once here
valiantly blooming through a cold winter day
I almost abandoned painting them all together
and just submitted this drawing I did of some poppies late last year
which conveniently happened to be in Rainbow Sherbet colours
as it is one of my favourite botanical drawings that I completed
but thought that was a bit rude
so I am putting both in
and you can imagine the tulips done in the detail like the poppies
and also because I don't want to miss Sunday Sketches
and there was minimal drawing in the tulips
whereas the poppies are drawn
so wins all round
well except for the poor bullied tulips
and fingers crossed that the next colour prompt
will be seasonal and the trauma can be averted... xx

Poor, beautiful, bullied tulips. I imagined them in a hot house with lots of light where they think it is spring--but then what a shock to them when they are carted off and out into the cooler winter weather. Notice I didn't say "cold" winter weather--LOL! ;) ;)

Both your drawings are wonderful. But your freer, looser, bright, colorful style you have now--I love! I think because there's more spirit in it. And I have always loved botanical drawings and wish I was talented enough to accomplish that feat myself. Now I am doubly in awe. ;)

you continue to delight me with your wonderfully funny posts. Both paintings are really wonderful, poor bullied tulips. Here we get around this quick dying problem by using the camera the instant they're in the vase!! We know they die the second they figure out they're living with McLeans. lol.
Hugs,

Tracey, your an awesome writer and artist and I love how you always share the story of what you are drawing. I also love the bullied tulips and the thought that they choose to show beauty if only for a few days. :) The poppies are magnificent! I love all of the veins and personality.

Great whimsical tulips... Although the description of their life... And what sounds like a potential early suicide was rather depressing! :-)

Love your vibrant tulips!
Stay inspired!

Okay Trace so you've passed the guilts to me now...I too may have bullied tulips but you see I never even asked! I just bought the suckers! What does that say about me???
But having said that they do appear to be happy here because they've become very 'perky' shall we say, standing tall and now the heads are beginning to open ;D
So my theory is if they did start life traumatized by bullying then they shall end their days basking in the afternoon sunlight (when it appears)and having me admire their beauty ;D
Now onto your paintings...to say they're stunning, amazing, brilliant etc etc, just doesn't really sum it up really. I'm in awe of you're skills. The vivid colour of the tulips is spectacularly dramatic but the delicacy and elegance of the poppies just perfect! :D

Wow! HSS.

I'm now looking at flowers that aren't supposed to be in bloom in a whole new light....
I keep forgetting our seasons are opposite. It's so warm here!! I bought Peonies, as it is too warm where I am to grow them and they are lasting a long time. Maybe they are a little hardier than tulips?

Lol! Poor tulips. :) I think they were grown in a hotbed or whatever it's called in English. :) Great paintings! I love the poppies, too.

In Minnesota, garden nurseries have "hot houses" which are delightful for both people and plants in the middle of the winter when temperatures plummet well below zero. I often think how shocking it must be for a plant or cut flowers to go outside in the dead of winter...kind of like the bullied tulips you so beautifully drew.

I like the difference in style of the flowers - the tulips with the brilliant color as the focus and the other flowers with the detail. Both are lovely!

That is sad to hear about the bullied tulips, and their journey. What is beautiful is that you captured them and had the opportunity to be there and see them. I'm sure they treasured how you felt. Beautiful drawings, and thanks for stopping by my blog. Such a pleasure to meet you too. :) Enjoy the rest of the color challenge. x Have a happy week

hahaha, 'forced' tulips!!

BEAUTIFUL artwork, you are so talented :o)

Terrie said...

even your quick paintings shine! Love this peek of spring - being a florist I somehow never thought of 'forced' flowers as objects to be pitied but my viewpoint is forever changed! What about all those forced roses for Valentines Day or forced lilies for weddings - OMG, I may never be able to use a flower not picked from my own garden again! :)

Oh that tulip sketchy painting is beautiful, I like the poppies as well but I think the tulips are just breath taking.

Ingrid Ormestad said...

Your sketchy 'tulip' painting is beautiful, Tracey, as are your poppies. Spring has just gone in Scotland and the tulips were gorgeous, my garden is an array of poppies, which I love. I'm sure your winter is better than the summer we are having in Edinburgh but at least we are surrounded by lots of lovely colour! Tc :)
