Revelations and Hamsters on a Wheel

I know people use words like inspiration and muse
and bandy them around like they are the be all and end all
but I kind of think they are our stock in trade as creatives

Revelation
on the other hand
arrives at the most unexpected times and ways
and usually completely blows
my frazzled chaotic mind
and I get a rare moment of clarity and purpose
and I feel everything shift in my brain

This shift could also be the result of the fact that there is so much crammed
in my teeny tiny brain at any one time
that just walking around a corner fast means
there is a danger that something important will spill out my ear
in fact it appears that more often than not
birthdates topple out of my brain
and you don't want to know what I lose every time I sneeze
but back to the revelation

I was lucky enough to win a copy of the Andrea Joseph Zine
How to draw like a Loon
from the wonderful and generous Vicki Holdwick at Faint Heart Art
and it blew my brain about a foot sideways
I have heard about zines
and seen pics of them
but that didn't prepare me for holding one of those little beauties in my hand
It is awesome....

All I have thought about since getting it is zines
I want to buy more zines
I want to make zines
I want to use zine in just about every sentence I utter
My brain has been going like a hamster in a wheel
and I have ideas spilling out all over the place
So it set me to drawing drawing drawing
I need to get those skills up if I am going to keep up with the hamster
so I started by drawing my box of watercolours..

.
and ode or homage to Andrea Joseph and her pens...
and her wonderful graphic skills
and the textures
and the joy and challenge of using pen alone
such fun this Sunday...
So head over to Faint Heart Art and show Vicki some love

and to Sunday sketches  hosted by the lovely Sophia
to see other mad drawing skills
I am off to think zines
any recommendations???

I think your box of watercolors is very cool! Zines are addictive! You can actually do anything with them. Have them with just drawings, do stories, poems, have it like a journal or scrap book and put different writings everywhere, like graffiti. Have fun! "Stacy"

i'm so used to seeing your trademark bright blues and oranges that i almost didn't recognize this as yours! But i like your zine-like approach to your paintbox!

I have not had a chance to hold andrea's zine in my hot little hands but i have been in awe of the magic she can create with a mere ballpoint pen.

Now, the real question is, will you leave it in black and white or will you add all your bright colors??? Can't wait to see! xoxo

I won a zine last year and it was so interesting. It even included materials attached to the pages so you could start on the various projects written about. I think a zine is a good place to start if you have plans of writing a book! Patsy from

I love the way you write...made me chuckle, your statement about going around the corner too fast. Hee. Your watercolour sketch is fantastic. I want to learn to draw with more detail like that. I'm finding that if I try too hard with my art it's not that great but if I just relax and basically not give any deep thought, it turns out exactly as I'd hoped. Hmmm...is that crazy?!

Anyway, zines....hmm...I've actually not heard of zines. If so, it's been so few that I don't recall. Ugh. But...going over to check out Vicki. :)

Happy SS!

Awww zines--that takes me back. I used to have one in the late 90s called Vulvateen. I kinda miss putting the thing together, with comics and band interviews and what-not. But I don't miss paying the printing fees or dealing with bookstores that only want to sell them on consignment and then forgetting they agreed to do so when they're all sold. On the other hands bookstores that worked with zine publishers are for the most part out of business now... so print zines in general are a lot harder to find than they used to be. Blogs are of course the evolution of zines. You can't argue with the fact they they're free and easy to use, but of course it's not the same thing.

But moving on--great job with the paint tubes.

I too have to look up a "zine"......

I love your imagery of things falling out of you....and can relate to soooo much stuff. Thanks for the chuckle.

Your sketch with all the paint tubes jumbled up fit quite nicely with your revelations. Nice lines!

sweet! masterful sketch of watercolour tubes - which are little more than potential art - the way random thoughts are potential inspiration

Wow, thank you Tracey. My friend, Emily Winfield, told me about this post. If you would like to make zines then I definitely recommend the Stolen Sharpie Revoloution which you can find.....actually what am I saying? That info is in my zine! Thanks for such kind words x
